Botanical Garden – Jardim Botânico
Splashes of Colour and Scents that will take your breath away!
Located above the town center of Funchal, this park was inaugurated in 1960 on the grounds of Quinta do Bom Sucesso, previously owned by the Reid´s family. The “Jardim Botânico” (Botanical Gardens) in Funchal displays over two thousand exotic plants both endemic and from all over the world such as Orchids, Magnolias, Azaleas, Palms, Ferns and Cacti. Although a botanical garden is a beautiful place that exposes colour and fragrance, it is also a place of science and culture. Throughout the garden, visitors will find plants that are identified by their scientific and common names, family and place of origin.
Within the “Jardim Botânico” there is a small Natural History Museum displaying collections of birds, fossils, rocks, minerals, animals, invertebrates and other vertebrates, an Amphitheatre, a terrace café and a belvedere which shows off a fantastic view of Funchal.
Boa Vista Orchid Garden
Founded in the 1960s by the late Group Captain Cecil Garton, O.B.E., in the grounds of Quinta da Boa Vista, which had been in his family for the past 100 years or so, and where he himself was born. After 30 years in the Royal Air Force, latterly spent as Air Attache in Lisbon and Madrid, he retired to Madeira where he took over the post of Honorary British Consul and devoted himself to developing the Quinta garden and to growing orchids. Cecil Garton’s widow, Betty, is the daughter of Sir William Cooke, one of the pioneers of orchid breeding, particularly of Cymbidiums, besides being a collector of rare and beautiful natural species.
To enter the tranquil setting of Boa Vista Orchids. This former working estate (quinta) is guaranteed to give you an ‘all-round experience’ of the beauty and peacefulness that Madeira has to offer.
After the tour of our estate, you are kindly invited to relax on the large sheltered and spacious lawn of the Quinta. A true opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of Madeira!
Pico da Torre Viewpoint
Offers a 360º panoramic view over the municipality of Câmara de Lobos and part of Funchal.
The Pico da Torre viewpoint stand’s at an elevation of 205 meters and is an excellent spot to observe the Câmara de Lobos city centre, its picturesque bay, the Cabo Girão promontory, the Estreito de Câmara de Lobos village and part of the municipality of Funchal.
Pico da Torre is topped by a cross, symbol of the commemoration of the 15th Anniversary of the National Revolution, for which it is also known as Pico da Cruz.
Observing the wonders of nature been cultivated from sea level to high mountains, here you will see abundance of Banana plantations down below as the vineyard’s gradual been grown in the mountains ,the greener of our wonderful Island.
